What is Microsoft Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing service that provides both software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). It was first released on February 1, 2010.`1′ Azure was first known as Windows Azure, and it’s only compatible with Microsoft products. Since then Microsoft has started to expand compatibility with other third-party software.

Azure is the combination of an organization’s existing IT assets (servers, operating systems, storage, applications) together with 50+ public cloud services that include IaaS and PaaS. Azure enables ‘hybrid’ cloud computing with a best-of-breed approach providing components that a customer can mix and match for a more customized solution. For example, a customer may use SaaS products plus IaaS virtual machines plus PaaS hosted applications to have a unique combination of public, private, and hybrid cloud computing. This provides customers with greater choice and flexibility to meet their needs. At the time of this writing, Microsoft Azure is only compatible with Microsoft Windows operating system environments; however, this will change as compatibility expands in the future.

Azure storage is designated as either ‘hot’ (data frequently accessed) or ‘cold’ (accessed less frequently). Data within Azure storage may be replicated across multiple facilities for high availability and disaster recovery purposes. Microsoft claims that data stored on their disks is encrypted such that it can only be decrypted by Microsoft’s proprietary software.

Who benefits from using it?

Microsoft Azure provides a number of services. These include VM for Linux and Windows environments, storage, networking, deployment models, management, scalability, high availability, backup & recovery, and testing. Azure is useful for people that want to quickly deploy their applications into the cloud, who need Enterprise-grade management & monitoring tool, or who require high availability. Azure’s scalability allows one to scale up or out as needed without any downtime. As a result, Azure is useful for development teams who want to go from proof-of-concept testing to full production on their own schedule. Microsoft Azure is also beneficial for organizations that need a cloud computing platform with high availability and scalability designed for hybrid networking between servers in a datacenter and ones hosted in the cloud.

What are Azure’s limitations?

Azure only supports Microsoft Windows operating system environments. This means that unless an application can run on a Microsoft Windows environment, it cannot be brought to Azure. Furthermore, applications must also have the ability to be deployed via PowerShell or the Azure command-line interface. To use some features of Azure, one must sign up for Microsoft Visual Studio Dev Essentials, which is only available to users of Windows operating systems.

Why needed to Buy verified Azure Accounts?

The limitations of Azure are that it only supports Microsoft Windows operating system environments. Furthermore, applications must also have the ability to be deployed via PowerShell or the Azure command-line interface. Azure is not available for Linux environments.

If one wants to use Azure, one must also sign up for Microsoft Visual Studio Dev Essentials, which is only available to users of Windows operating systems. If one has a non-Windows application that cannot run on a Microsoft Windows environment and does not have the ability to be deployed via PowerShell or the Azure command-line interface, then Azure may not be the right choice for them. Azure is not available for Linux environments, so those who need to use Linux will have to go with an alternative provider. Users of non-Windows applications may opt for a different cloud computing service that better meets their needs.
